‘He who undertakes to teach himself has a fool for a pupil’ – unknown

IMG_1516Now I am almost entirely self-taught as a maker, and I can find no grounds on which to argue with this powerful dose of wisdom. In fact it is my innate tendency to foolishness that I consider the most necessary of personality traits when it comes to making things for the first time.

IMG_1513Climbing mountains, or rock faces for the first time is obvious foolishness, free diving to ridiculous depths for absolutely no good reason without any certainty of outcome is the essence of idiocy.

Heating air inside a giant bladder and strapping yourself to it just to see IMG_1505how high you can go must be the result of some cerebral malfunction, some anomalous disruption of ones rational decision making faculties.

But I’m so glad that humans consistently disrupt IMG_1510the accepted boundaries of the safe, and the normal and the sensible – and this is how we grow.

Long live the fools and their contribution to invention.
